2007 Review

Coming into the season, Sabathia's career high in innings was 210. Last year, Sabathia obliterated

that mark by posting 241 innings--tops in the major leagues. Speaking of innings, 27-year-old

Sabathia already has pitched 1,407 career innings. Most pitchers are suppose to break down when

subjected to that kind of workload at such a young age. Sabathia isn't like most pitchers. He's

huge, listed at 6'7" and 290 pounds. I'm sure Newton said something about larger masses being

affected differently in his dissertation on the physics of pitching.

2008 Outlook

Sabathia's walk rate has dropped about .7 points in each of the past three seasons. So, being that

his walk rate was down to 1.4 last year, does that mean that this year it's going to be .7? Probably

not, but this is a wonderful trend for a pitcher in his prime. His homerun rate has also fallen the

past three seasons. He's the defending AL Cy Young Award winner. There's nothing not to like

about this kid. You worry about the heavy workload, but as we've discussed, the normal rules don't

apply.
